The Legend Of Kwati

Prologue: Legend Of Kwati

The Ancients told us this story of how our land came to be. They said that long before man, even long before the world, there was only one spirit: Kwati. He dwells in the Ocean of Air, which is always above our land; and his name means: The Changer. In one day, he created the four separate parts of the Island of Rivers. The first was the one closest to the sky. He throwed  down the mountain peaks, and covered their shoulders with snow. This was Kwati’s sacred place. Guarded with the thunder of the avalanche, and the icy teeth of winds.

When Kwati stepped down from the high peaks, he bade the storms to stay behind. Then he made a place of gentle valleys, and said: “Here there should be Salmon Berries, and fruits, and grasses.” He planted the seeds and roots he had brought, and then he spread over this land a “veil of mist;” so the Weather Spirits could not harm it. Kwati then stepped out from a cloud onto the mountains, he said: “Here there should be trees, strong trees like a great tribe of warriors.” He walked. And where ever his eyes touched the ground, a tree grew there.

When the forests were made, Kwati cast out for himself a sparkling sea---and flew over it, with the joy of and eagle. He thought back upon all the places and things he made, and he was content. The Ocean Place he decreed, would be the land of beginnings.

When the day of creation had ended, Kwati felt old, and tired---pulled his blanket around him, and then turned himself into stone---and rested.

When Kwati, our creator, first ventured below the sky world; he came as heat, and as fire. In a great cauldron, he brought fury and let it boil over into the world below! The Changer was angry, because he saw that he was, alone. A long time later, Kwati came again. He came as the Night Sun, and as wind, and as water in the wind. With these things, he filled the skies of the world below and then he watched them---as they danced.

Finally, Kwati spoke; and it was with the voice of thunder. He called together the rains and made the seas; and to make the Earth, he pressed together the darkness and the great rivers of clouds. Kwati looked at all these things he that made and said: “There should be more light!” So he summoned the Copper Ball, and set it to travel from the sky to the sea and back again. He was pleased with the dancing of the light.

It was a long time before Kwati returned, to see what he had made. He called again to the spirits of the wind, and the water, and the land; but still no voice answered him. It was then that, Kwati sent the clouds to talk to the Earth. He told them to embrace; and, make for him living things. All this time, while the clouds and Earth answered Kwati’s wishes---he went away and, wait.

While The Changer slept, the Earth Mother whispered to the sea, to bring her green things for animal people she was planning to make---to surprise Kwati. In time, the sea brought the Earth all that she had asked. When Kwati returned one day, he called out again; and when the Animal People answered---he was pleased.

In those times, the Animal People could put on or, take off their fur and feathers. Everyone could speak, and all the others understood. It was then that, Kwati decided to make a place for new spirits---who would speak to him in the language of The Changer.

When Kwati saw the land was ready, and full of gifts to welcome them, he called to the Human People---and they came.

Once in the time of the Ancients, Kwati summoned the Human People, and showed them the great forest he had made. On that day, he taught the people the right way to use his gifts. They must take the spirits of the wood and the salmon with care. Like the Animal People, the humans must make use of all they took.

Kwati spoke to the people in many voices: in the cry of the eagle, in the howling winds, in the sharp tongue of the changing seasons! In this way, the people learned that Kwati’s spirit watched them; from within everything that lives.

When Kwati, had laid out for the Human People their places, and their way; he went back to the sky world and thought all would be well. . .

When he returned, disguised as the Night Sun, he watched the Human People; and saw that now they enslaved one another, and stole from each other---and warred.

Kwati became so angry that he vowed to leave the Human People forever! Out of the silence, the people heard a great whirring of wings, and then Kwati changed himself one more time. He became the mighty Thunderbird. He flew to a high ice cave to live alone---in silence. Because the Human People had grieved him, he would now take for company only the Animal People, and the grasses that flowered.

In the Ancient Time, young warriors did enter the forbidden place, seeking the spirits of their ancestors. And some humans still go there---but only a few.

After The Great Spirit left in anger, to live in the high caves, he caught all the clouds as they passed over him; and wrung out the water, so that no rain would fall on the east. The people cried out to The Changer; they reminded him, that he, promised the water would never leave the Island of Rivers---but only change like the seasons.

Kwati heard the people.

With his breath, he melted some ice from his cave. He told it to go down to find the seeds and roots the Animal People and the humans; and to let them drink again. With the water, Kwati sent the people this warning, he told them: “Never to harm, or try to stop the rivers!”

Kwati, had made the Water Spirits to be “changers” like himself. And in time, the Water Spirits would make the Human People into “changers” also. The human people would be made to forever reach for the streams and rivers. In time, Kwati would teach the humans all the secrets of these waters, so that the people could prosper.

This is what Kwati told us about the World: “that each thing we see belongs to one “web of life.” Life, cannot be undone only transformed. Watch seeds as they break through to the sun, and the forest which is forever reborn. And learn not to fear change.”

If we could learn the languages of all our fellow beings; and speak to them from our hearts, then the spirits of the Earth, sky, and water would point to us our path---and we could keep harmony with the Wheel of Life. . . .
